Emma Simms moves past a troubling childhood in small-town Clare, Michigan, to become a successful writer. After being abandoned by her father and losing her mother to drugs, Emma raises her younger sister, Kate, and maintains her emotional and mental equilibrium by keeping the friendly residents of Clare at a safe distance.
In fact, in all her relationships, Emma plays it cool, choosing to break up with boyfriends before things get “too serious” and keeping only one close, true friend. She’s been hurt before and isn’t willing to get hurt again, so she keeps her heart under lock and key and refuses to let anyone in too deep.
This strategy works well enough until a mysterious man comes to town, and Emma’s life—and the lives of the people she cares about—begin to unravel, forcing her to confront painful questions about love and loss.
A suspenseful, fast-paced psychological thriller, Pieces of Stone is about the desire to belong, family ties, and the fears and needs that plague us all.

However, several uneven/ unnecessary/repetitive elements that intruded with the flow of the story. The many pages- long sex scene seems to be a contrived scene that reeks of an author checking off "sex" on a what the reading public likes to-do list. The italicized "them" and " whispers" on almost every page became annoying. The reader gets it; don't repeat the entire scenario every time! SO many coincidences, also, entirely too many to be plausible. This pretty good story could be very good with more thought and editing for content by the author.Product details

I liked this book as it was an easy read to understand about different people, and easy to follow. She had a hard life & when her Father left, her Mother started using drugs & she had to take over raising her younger sister. This book got a hold of me from the beginning that I did not want to put it down. It was a really great thriller. I really like it when you have a book you are reading and you have to put it down but you can pick it up and continue reading it without going back pages to try to get caught up where you left of. I would really recommend this book. I did not want the book to end.
Thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. Descriptions are so life like ones feels part of the story. Emotions of characters so totally humanistic. Never a slow spot in the narrative. Readers of all ages will enjoy this book. Be prepared anyone who thinks they know what will happen next are going to be surprised. Great for a sit down and read straight through, but so easy to follow the plot and characters, also great for people to pick up and read any time you have a chance without feeling the need to re-read parts to catch up.
The premise and plot was good, I just think it took way too long to get to some of the major points in the book. Luke has been planning for years how to make his family with Emma and her sister Kate. Too bad none of the other players knew about his plan. Things are not going well for Luke, which means he has to do something about those he perceives are I his way. There is some really good tension between the characters, and the ending is---, sorry no spoilers.
This is an outstanding psychological thriller. It's suspenseful, fast-paced, well written, and will keep you entertained. It is mostly about fear of others, and of relationships. But it's also about loss and love. Emma Simms had a troubled childhood ... her father left the family, her mother took to drugs, and Emma was tasked with raising her younger sister. She's become a successful author, but still her emotions and equilibrium keep the residents of her town at a distance. Until, that is, a mysterious man comes to town and lives begin to unravel. Emma now has to face herself, her emotions, and perhaps change her life. A great read; highly recommend.
A powerful opening.l Two girls escaping captivity. I was immediately drawn into the writer's skillful style creating a scene that left me breathless. The plot is developed as the writer takes you back to when the two main characters sisters Emma and Kate lost their mother from an overdose. Their father then left, battling his own demons. They were on their own. Emma the oldest sister had to take over and be Mom and Dad to Kate, Emma, 4 years her senior.they were 19 and 15.
The plot quickly thickens as characters are brought into the story, each a mystery and enticing the reader to long for more. David, Emma's boyfriend, an old lady, and a man, someone the old lady knew come to cause harm, the same man stalking David, and Emma's friend Allison all perfectly placed. Amazing writing style leaving the plot wide open and the reader's imagination running wild. Luke, the mystery man is deceiving everyone and the writer entangles him in many lives with lies and sick obsessions, and none of his frightening, disturbed and obsessive intentions are detected. His traumatic past as unsettling as his life choices now. The frightening final chapters are powerfully written. The forces of mental illness and long time obsessions crash together in a violent storm. The fight for survival and protection of loved ones, unyielding. A must read for anyone who believes in fighting for life and love and family despite the unimaginable.
Someone told me about this book. I am always looking for something different, fresh and will keep me interested. This book did all that and more. Very good story-line. You get involved with the story from the first page. The author does a good job of transferring the characters emotions and feeling so you can envision who they are, what they look like and can even feel what they are feeling.
Because I have a busy life, it usually takes me about a month to read a decent book of this size. This book I read in one week!
Apparently, even small towns have strangers and creepy psychos. Scared me too much to read at night. Suspense kept building throughout and pages flipped faster and faster. If you like a happy ending, stop on page 236. If you like a mysterious, creepy ending, read the next 2 pages. Good author with an easy writing style. My only other criticism would be lack of character build up. I like to 'delve deep'. I was confused about the connection between the father and Emma and the father and Luke. The interrelationships between people were not explained in great detail and remain somewhat of a mystery of its own. All that being said, I did totally LOVE reading this book.
